The killing of George Floyd at the hands of police focused the world’s attention on the problem of police abuse and misconduct in ways that few other cases have. In the US, the murder of Floyd renewed calls for police reform and led to calls to abolish policing as we know it. Maintain the status quo, some said, and policing will continue to cause more harm than good. Others worry that dismantling the police will lead to anarchy. What can be done in the realm of “public safety” so that everyone is in fact “safe?” That question is addressed in Reimagining Safety, a documentary film by Los Angeles filmmaker, author and conflict resolution facilitator, Matthew Solomon. In this episode of SoCal Voices, Matthew talks about the indirect route that led him to create Reimagining Safety, his DIY approach to making the film, the social justice community’s response to the documentary, and his vision for a brighter, safer future.
