Disability is "just a slice"

Disability is

One of my favorite SoCal Voices episodes this season is “Beyond Her Diagnosis: Jennifer Gasner’s Unexpected Life.” I was moved by her candor and inspired by her message of positivity, joy and hope. I loved her message that "disability is just a slice" of who she, and others living with disabilities are. Their diagnosis isn’t all that defines them. She highlights the importance of seeing people with disabilities as whole individuals with unique experiences, talents, and qualities. By sharing her story and advocating for greater understanding and empathy, Gasner encourages others to look beyond the surface and recognize the full humanity of individuals with disabilities.

One key takeaway from Gasner’s message is the importance of setting aside assumptions and expectations when interacting with individuals with disabilities. Rather than assuming limitations or barriers, it is crucial to approach each person with an open mind and a willingness to see their potential and capabilities. By shifting our mindset to "assume I can, so maybe I will," we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with disabilities to thrive and succeed.

Furthermore, Gasner’s work as a writer and speaker demonstrates the power of storytelling in creating connections and fostering empathy. Through sharing her experiences and insights, she is able to reach a wide audience and inspire others to see the world from a different perspective. Her ability to connect with readers and listeners on a personal level, regardless of their own experiences with disability, highlights the universal themes of resilience, courage, and hope that transcend individual circumstances.

Gasner's story serves as a powerful reminder that disability is just one aspect of a person's identity and should not define or limit their potential. By embracing diversity, promoting understanding, and celebrating the unique strengths of individuals with disabilities, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute their talents.
