Studies show that children begin their lives with similar levels of confidence, but girls' confidence plummets between the ages of 8 - 12 years. The 20/20 Club at Virginia Primrose Elementary School in Fontana is working to change that. In the latest episode of SoCal Voices — “Boosting Confidence in SoCal Girls” — 4th and 5th graders share how The 20/20 Club is helping them build their confidence and self-esteem.
Teacher and club facilitator LaTina McGhee-Simmons says she started the club for upper elementary school girls as an extension of her program for teens (Daughters of Promise), to give girls the support that she didn't have at their age. In the club, McGhee-Simmons facilitates discussions, leads the girls in challenging and affirming activities including vision boards, conducts role-playing sessions aimed at enhancing the girls problem-solving skills, and coordinates a fun end-of-year celebration.
In the episode, you'll hear 5th graders Sophia, Maya and Mose, and 4th grader Emily talk about how the 20/20 Club has impacted their lives: how it has changed them, made them more confident and enhanced their sense of self-worth.
